I enjoyed talking to students at Kenton Erice 1 BOCES about how to use social media in a positive way both professionally and personally! This was my last public speaking engagement in Western New York, and I’m so glad I was able to spend it with a great group of kids ❤️
I made a powerpoint presentation that focused on the pros and cons of social media, how to use it positively, and the negative impacts that can do a number on mental health.
I use social media everyday on the job by tweeting information about my stories and sharing my stories to my Facebook news page. It’s been a great way to gain followers and find story ideas. When social media is used to spread useful information and positive messages, it can be a very effective tool.
Unfortunately, social media has also become a platform for internet trolls and there are a number of studies that link social media use to increased anxiety in young adults. Scrolling through platforms like Instagram makes some people feel bad about themselves because they are constantly comparing their lives to other people they see on Instagram “living their best life.” It’s important to remember that what you see on social media is often a highlight reel, and only partial reality. There’s always much more to the story than meets the eye, that’s why you should never compare yourself! It’s an important message for young people to hear especially in todays day and age!
